Community Art Education > "I am the Face Of_______"

Winter 2016: “I Am the Face of _______” is inspired by social justice leaders who represent powerful movements throughout history. Martin Luther King Jr. is seen as the face of the Civil Rights movement. At the time, Aung San Suu Kyi was considered to be the face of democracy in Burma.

In this body of work, Refugee Youth Project participants from Moravia Park Primary School found ways to visually represent their unique personalities and cultures through patterns and symbols. In considering their identities, youth were encouraged to understand and believe that they are a powerful force in this world. Any one of us can be a leader and ignite change, but it starts by claiming it from within. By completing the statement “ I am the face of _______”, youth are proudly declaring what matters to them.

At the opening, we had a Photo Booth, where youth and guests could write their I am the face of... statement on a white board, get their photo taken and add it to our community art piece. The Photo Booth was provided by Pixilated.
