Confederate statues loom in our towns and cities disguised as heroes. These monuments are symbols of the white supremacy that still penetrates our country. After heinous hate crimes and public outcry, they are gradually being removed. In feats of performance art, they are dangled from cranes, tied down in the beds of semis, and rushed off to unknown warehouses in the night. Their societal influence becomes apparent as people react to their contentious disappearance. But I think the removal of public artworks commemorating people that fought to oppress and enslave represents a fundamental shift in our culture and our collective awareness. These paintings commemorate and contemplate this step forward.
